The Deacon’s Den

Aloha Everyone! This is a new monthly column for St Luke’s newsletter.

My idea: for Deacon Tom and I to have a forum to share what we’re doing in the community and in St Luke’s Church. However, for June, I’d like to tell you a little about me and my diaconal ministry over the years. It’s like the song: Getting to Know You…getting to know all about you.

By the time I was ordained in 1996, my mother had died in Switzerland. My father had congestive heart failure, so we brought him back to California to live with us. I soon discovered he had dementia. This changed my focus of ministry to elder issues. I was also active in my county, coordinating the county-wide Thanksgiving basket program for the needy and the annual Angel Tree program for needy kids as well as small ministries in my congregation that involved our church members.

In June 2005, we retired to the big island of Hawai`i. Within a year, Bishop Chang asked if I’d be willing to be a supply clergy for an Episcopal mission on the other side of the island. I said yes, then began a 3 times a month trek with my husband to lead services and preach to a congregation 1 ½ hrs from my home. This changed my ministry focus again for the next 2 ½ years. This small but mighty congregation saw ways the poor community around them needed help, and they figured out ways to offer help: weekly showers and a free lunch, converting a kids’ classroom into a computer lab for kids who didn’t have a computer of their own, or maybe they had no electricity at home.

Once a priest was hired, my ministry focus changed again to helping more with community outreach especially visiting seniors and bringing Communion to them in their homes. By this time, we had moved to this part of the island.

In 2015 we moved back to northern California to be near family and friends. My ministry focus changed back to elder issues and now also suicide survivors’ issues. I was on the Board of Directors for the Senior Center, was a Senior Visitor to elderly ladies, and taught a weekly hula class at the center. Then I was asked to be a Caring Friend to other women who have experienced a loved one’s suicide. I continue to talk to 2 of my ladies, most weeks, by phone, and I talk to my 89-year-old lady who is part of the Senior Visitor program. Also, through my quilt guild, I made adult clothing protectors, placemats for homebound seniors, dog beds, and sometimes a quilt for the community.

And now I’m here in Deming. Each time on my spiritual journey, I’ve listened for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and inspiration, asking, “What am I to do this time?” I don’t have an answer right now so I’m keeping my eyes and ears open and once again listening for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and inspiration. Come Holy Spirit!

A hui hou (til we meet again) – Deacon Sandy
