NEWSLETTER JULY 2024
Church Service on Sundays 10:30-11:30
For Today
O God, give me strength to live another day; Let me not turn coward before its difficulties or prove recreated to its duties; Let me not lose faith in other people; Keep me sweet and sound of heart, in spite of ingratitude, treachery or meanness; Preserve me from minding little stings or giving them; Help me to keep my heart clean, and to live honestly and fearlessly that no outward failure can dishearten me or take away the joy of conscious integrity; Open wide the eyes of my soul that I may see good in all things; Grant me this day some new vision of this truth; Inspire me with the spirit of joy and gladness; and make me the cup of strength to suffering souls; In the name of the strong Deliverer, our only Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen

Episcopal Church Elects Youngest Presiding Bishop in History
The Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe elected 28th presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church
In a landmark decision at the General Convention in Kentucky, The Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe has been elected as the next Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States. At 49 years old, he becomes the youngest Presiding Bishop ever elected in the church's history. This election continues the Episcopal Church's tradition of breaking new ground, following the appointments of the first openly gay, female, and black Presiding Bishops.
The Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe, who currently serves as the bishop of the Episcopal Dioceses of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Western New York, was elected and confirmed as the 28th presiding bishop and primate of The Episcopal Church on June 26. He will begin his nine-year term on November 1.
Rowe's election came from a pool of five nominees. He secured 89 out of 158 votes on the first ballot, surpassing the 82 votes needed for election. His selection was subsequently confirmed by the House of Deputies with a substantial majority of 778 votes in favor and 43 against.
Rowe has served as the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania since 2007 and took on the additional role of bishop provisional of Western New York in 2019. His extensive experience includes serving as the bishop provisional of the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem from 2014 to 2018.
Born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Rowe holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Grove City College, a master of divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in organizational learning and leadership from Gannon University. Notably, he was the youngest Episcopal priest in the U.S. at the time of his ordination in 2000 at age 24, and he was the youngest member of the House of Bishops when consecrated at age 32.
Rowe is renowned for his contributions to organizational learning and adaptive performance within the church. His roles include serving as parliamentarian for the House of Bishops and the Episcopal Church Executive Council, chairing the Episcopal Church Building Fund, and being a member of the Standing Commission on Structure, Governance, and Constitution and Canons. He also serves on the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable and was the first bishop to serve on the House of Deputies Committee on the State of the Church in 2018.
Rowe is married to Carly Rowe, a Christian educator, and they have a daughter named Lauren. His official installation as Presiding Bishop will take place on November 1, with details about the transition and celebration to be announced following the General Convention.
AN INVITATION TO JOIN AN EfM COMMUNITY 2024-25
An Education for Ministry (EfM) group meets weekly from September through May each year here in Albuquerque. We have met via Zoom for the past 3 years and will continue to do so as some of our participants live too far away for us to meet face to face. We meet for a minimum of 2 hours once a week for 36 weeks. Our schedule is adjusted for holidays. The day and time is determined by the participants’ schedules. This past year we met Tuesdays, 6-8:10PM.
This four-year continuing education program was begun by the School of Theology at Sewanee: University of the South in 1975. EfM invites participants into small, mentored groups that provide the framework for understanding life and shaping actions as Christian faith is deepened.
Participants join for a variety of reasons. “I wanted to know more about the Bible ... who wrote it ... how it was organized ...” said Rosa Valencia, who graduated from EfM in 2017. “EfM helped me to find answers to my questions about the history of religion, but more importantly, EfM helped me connect to my God,” Rosa Valencia recalls. She joined the Cathedral as a result of her EfM studies.
During their four years in EfM participants study 1) the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), 2) the New Testament; 3) history of the Church, and 4) theological and moral ideas. Each participant reads the assigned material for him/herself during the week. This will take 4 or more hours a week in personal study.
The heart of the EfM experience is the weekly seminar group. Through discussion and guided reflection, the seminars furnish an opportunity to deepen understanding of the reading materials. Seminar groups work under the leadership of mentors who contract to serve as guides and administrators. They are not teachers in the traditional sense who are expected to impart information about the Christian tradition. (The role of the teacher is built into the program materials.)
EfM also trains participants in the art of Theological Reflection — bringing “the lens of Faith to bear on any aspect of life"--so we can each align our behavior with what we say we believe. EfM graduate Sandy Veltkamp agrees: EfM provided “a connectedness between what I profess to be my Faith and my daily life ... EfM internalized my Faith.”
By examining their own beliefs and their relationship to our culture and the tradition of our Christian faith, participants can learn what it means to be effective ministers in the world. In coming to terms with the notion that everything we do has potential for manifesting the love of Christ, we discover that our ministry is at hand wherever we turn.
The EfM program is preparation the work we pray for at the end of the Eucharist: “And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.”
The one unforeseen but perhaps greatest benefit from EfM is the closeness of ‘EfMers’ to each other because of their shared "Living into the Journey of God." 2017 EfM graduate Betty Logan recalls "the most joyful surprise comes from the lasting friendships, which bring not only an understanding of different perspectives, but also become a source of loving support and fellowship." Sandy VeltKamp adds that she cherishes the ‘amazing support from fellow participants...and the grace!’

Dear St. Luke's Family,
We're excited to introduce a new feature on our church's website: the Verse of the Day series. Each day, we will highlight a passage from Scripture that we hope will inspire, challenge, and comfort you as you navigate through your daily activities.
To help us delve deeper into the meaning of each passage, Kenny Sallee, ThM, a respected theologian and passionate teacher with a Master’s degree in Theology, has provided thoughtful commentaries. His insights will help us dive deeper into Scripture and draw practical applications for our daily lives.
Kenny encourages us to embrace these Scriptures in our daily prayers, not merely as requests for relief but as expressions of thanks to God, who cares deeply for our well-being. By doing so, we allow God's peace to shield our hearts and minds, helping us face life's challenges with a grounded and steadfast spirit.
We invite you to read Kenny's full commentary on our website and reflect on how you can incorporate these beautiful Scriptures into your life. Let's continue to support each other in faith, prayer, and thanksgiving as we seek to live out God's word each day.
May God's peace be with you all,
Is your life affected by someone’s drinking? Your child, a parent, your spouse, or a friend.
