Romans 3:23-24
Since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Introduction
There is perhaps no clearer summary of the Gospel than what we find in Romans 3:23–24. In just two verses, Paul presents the universal condition of humanity and the magnificent gift offered through Christ. These words are both sobering and hope-filled—revealing our need and pointing us to the grace that meets it.
Commentary
Paul begins with a sweeping statement: “All have sinned.” This isn’t limited to a few wayward souls but includes every person—past, present, and future. Sin isn't just about bad behavior; it is falling short of the radiant, holy glory of God. But the next verse is just as powerful: despite this universal failure, justification is offered freely. It is not something we can earn, barter for, or deserve. It comes "by his grace as a gift.” And the cost of that gift? “Redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” The word “redemption” implies a price paid to set someone free—like ransoming a slave. Christ’s life, death, and resurrection become the currency of our freedom.
Understanding the Context
Romans 3 is part of Paul’s broader argument in the early chapters of the letter where he establishes that both Jews and Gentiles are under sin. No one can claim righteousness through the Law or by heritage. Paul is building toward the Good News by first laying down the hard truth—no one is righteous by their own merit. Verse 23 concludes his explanation of humanity's fallen state, while verse 24 opens the door to the new covenant reality: we are justified, declared right before God, not by works, but through grace given in Christ.
Application for Today
In a world that constantly tells us to "prove ourselves," this passage comes like a drink of cool water in a desert. You don't have to earn God’s love—you can't. Your past, your failures, your regrets—none of them can disqualify you from grace, because grace was never about your qualifications to begin with. For those who feel unworthy, verse 24 is a balm: God justifies the unworthy because of Jesus. As believers, this truth also humbles us. It levels the playing field and reminds us that no one is above another—we all stand in need of the same Savior.
Reflection
Take a moment to consider: What does it mean to you that grace is a gift? Are there areas in your life where you still try to "earn" God's approval or carry guilt over past sins already forgiven? Romans 3:23–24 invites you to rest—not in your performance—but in the finished work of Christ. Let your identity be shaped by grace, and let that same grace overflow into how you see and treat others. We are all sinners, but we are also all candidates for redemption.
