Psalm 62:7

On God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

Introduction

Psalm 62 is a song of trust in God’s providence and protection, attributed to David. This psalm reflects an unwavering confidence in God amidst adversity. In verse 7, the psalmist declares that both salvation and honor come from God, emphasizing divine sovereignty and security. The imagery of God as a rock and refuge conveys stability, strength, and a place of safety. This verse invites us to place our full trust in God rather than in worldly assurances.

Commentary

The phrase "On God rests my deliverance and my honor" affirms that salvation is not the result of human effort but is a gift from God. David, likely writing in a time of personal distress or opposition, acknowledges that his reputation and vindication are in God’s hands. In a world where honor is often determined by status or the opinions of others, this verse reminds us that true honor comes from a right relationship with God.

The second half of the verse, "my mighty rock, my refuge is in God," reinforces God’s role as a protector. The metaphor of a rock, frequently used in the Psalms, illustrates the immovable and unshakable nature of God. A refuge provides shelter in times of trouble, offering both physical and spiritual safety. This assurance allowed David to remain steadfast despite challenges.

Understanding the Context

Psalm 62 is written as a declaration of faith against adversaries who seek to undermine the psalmist. The context suggests that David was facing betrayal or opposition, yet instead of seeking revenge or relying on his own strength, he expresses complete trust in God. The psalm echoes themes found throughout the Old Testament, particularly in the lives of figures like Moses, who relied on God’s protection, and Job, who sought refuge in God's justice despite suffering.

This psalm also speaks against placing trust in wealth, power, or human alliances. In the surrounding verses, David contrasts reliance on God with the fleeting nature of human strength and deceitful riches (Psalm 62:9-10). The emphasis is on divine justice and the certainty of God’s faithfulness.

Application for Today

In a world where people seek security in money, reputation, and influence, Psalm 62:7 reminds us that true stability comes only from God. Many struggle with anxiety over their future, personal identity, or the opinions of others. This verse encourages believers to rest in the assurance that God is our refuge, our deliverer, and the source of our honor.

For those facing criticism, injustice, or uncertainty, this passage invites a shift in perspective—from striving for control to resting in God’s promises. It also challenges us to examine where we place our trust. Do we depend on our abilities, relationships, or material wealth, or do we seek our security in God alone?

Practically, this psalm calls us to a life of prayer and faith, especially in difficult times. Trusting in God’s deliverance does not mean passivity but an active reliance on His guidance and provision.

Reflection

  • In what areas of your life do you struggle to trust God fully?

  • How does knowing that your honor and security rest in God change your perspective on personal challenges?

  • What steps can you take to make God your true refuge, especially in times of trouble?

Psalm 62:7 is a powerful reminder that our salvation, honor, and protection are found in God alone. In times of distress, may we anchor ourselves in Him, our mighty rock and refuge.
