Psalm 118:5-6

Out of my distress I called on the LORD; the LORD answered me and set me in a broad place. With the LORD on my side I do not fear. What can mortals do to me?

Introduction

Psalm 118 is a part of the Hallel psalms used in Jewish liturgical traditions, particularly during Passover. It is a song of thanksgiving that celebrates God's enduring mercy and the deliverance of Israel from its enemies. Verses 5-6 emphasize personal deliverance, expressing trust in God's power over adversity.

Commentary

These verses reveal the psalmist's intense moment of personal crisis and the subsequent divine response. The imagery of being set in a "broad place" suggests relief and freedom after experiencing constriction and distress. It's a metaphorical expression of safety and spaciousness, where there is no longer the pressure of immediate threats.

Understanding Context

This passage is both a testament to personal faith and a communal affirmation, used to recall God's past deliverances and to inspire trust in His ongoing protection. The rhetorical question, "What can mortals do to me?" underscores a profound trust in God's sovereignty, emphasizing that human threats pale in comparison to divine power.

Application for Today

In today's context, these verses inspire believers to trust in God during times of distress or anxiety. They remind us that God's presence provides a spiritual "broad place" where fear is replaced with peace. This passage encourages believers to reach out to God in prayer during challenges, expecting His deliverance and protection.

Reflection

Consider your own life's "narrow places"—times when you felt constricted or overwhelmed. Reflect on how God has answered your calls for help or how you might still be seeking His broad place of safety. What fears might you need to release, trusting that with the Lord on your side, you need not fear what others can do? Engage in prayer, asking God to broaden your spiritual landscape, providing you peace and assurance amidst life's trials.
