Kenny Sallee's Confirmation into the Episcopal Church

On September 29th, Kenny Sallee was confirmed into the Episcopal Church during a ceremony held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in La Union, New Mexico. Rich with tradition and filled with communal prayers, this ceremony marked a significant milestone in his spiritual journey, which began when he was baptized in Emmanuel Baptist Church in Marion, Kansas, on March 25th, 1973.

The event was presided over by the Rt. Rev. Michael Buerkel Hunn, the Bishop of the Diocese of the Rio Grande. The church, beautifully adorned to reflect the solemnity of the occasion, saw congregants and visitors alike join in the celebration. Kenny, who has been deeply involved in various church activities and community service, expressed his joy and commitment to living out his faith in the Episcopal tradition.

Kenny’s journey to this day has been marked by an earnest pursuit of spiritual growth and theological education. His decision to join the Episcopal Church stems from a period of discernment and reflection on his faith journey, as well as his aspirations to contribute more profoundly to the community.

The ceremony included traditional elements such as the laying on of hands, where Bishop Hunn and other clergy members prayed for the Holy Spirit to empower Kenny for his continued service and ministry. This act was a powerful moment, visibly moving many in attendance.

The confirmation service was followed by a community gathering in the parish hall, where church members extended their congratulations and shared fellowship. The event underscored the inclusive and supportive spirit of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, reflecting its commitment to welcoming all who seek to be part of their worshiping community.

As Kenny Sallee steps into this new role within his church, he carries with him a wealth of experiences and a heart full of passion for theological inquiry and pastoral care. His confirmation is not just a testament to his faith but also a beacon of his dedication to the teachings of Christ and his eagerness to impact his community positively.

Emergency Contact Information

Our congregation is made up of people who have moved to Deming from other states. For some of us, this means that IF there is a medical emergency or other emergency (perhaps a fire or flood), would St Luke’s know who to contact out-of-state, i.e., son, daughter, etc.? If you are comfortable sharing this information with St Luke’s, please call Barbara. Your family information will be kept confidential and only used in an emergency.

The days are getting shorter, and the temperatures are beginning to cool. Fall is upon us; so are family celebrations in our family. In years past, this was indeed a busy time of year for us. From September 24th, my mother’s birthday, through to my ordination anniversary, Oct 16th, we had five birthdays to celebrate and our wedding anniversary. Alas, that has changed! We now have only one birthday to celebrate, Fred’s, plus our wedding anniversary and my ordination date. The years have changed so many family celebrations. However, I still savor the memories of those happy times. We were so blessed to have had those relatives in our lives.

I think of Fall as not only harvest time but also as a time to count my blessings and be grateful. Grateful for what was and grateful for what is. I am blessed to have still my husband alive and well. I’m blessed to have good health (even though my knees complain! 😉). And I’m blessed to be part of a welcoming congregation that likes having me, an older woman who was retired for 10 years, serve as one of your deacons. St Luke’s people are so forgiving of my mistakes! I’m grateful!

This is also a time of the year when I marvel and ponder about how Fred and I got to be this old. Some days, our aches and pains remind us of our age, but we keep moving anyway. And I keep wondering how we can possibly be married for 61 years! Does that mean we’re as old as dirt?! Not quite. Fred’s grandparents celebrated just over 70 years of marriage. We’re not there…yet.

I find that an attitude of gratitude goes a long way toward having a happy life. God has blessed us richly. God has filled our cups to overflowing so we can bless others and hopefully help others. There is a saying that goes, “Blessed to be a blessing.”

What are you grateful for, and how are you blessed?

Your grateful, blessed deacon — Sandy

Small Group Bible Study

Beginning in November, Kenny Sallee will lead a small group Bible study, offering an opportunity for deep, meaningful exploration of scripture. Kenny, a well-respected theologian with a Master’s degree in Theology, serves as a teaching assistant for Biblical Interpretations under Professor Ray Vander Laan at Christian Leaders Institute—a platform that offers free and affordable ministry and theological education to aspiring Christian leaders. He will guide participants through Ray Vander Laan's powerful series, That The World May Know, which combines scholarly research with stunning footage from key biblical locations.

This study is designed to bring the Bible to life, connecting ancient history with modern faith. Vander Laan, a renowned biblical scholar and historian, leads participants through immersive lessons that highlight how the cultural and historical context of scripture can deepen understanding and strengthen daily Christian practice. For a preview of the series, visit the Bible Study section of the church's website.

The Bible study begins on Sunday, November 3rd, at 9:00 AM and will run for 5 sessions. Since seating is limited to 10 participants, early registration is recommended. Guidebooks will be provided by the church, and a sign-up sheet is available on the parish hall bulletin board.

Session 1, Promised Land, will take us on a journey through Israel, transforming our understanding of scripture by visiting the Jordan River, Jericho, and more. Participants will learn how these locations hold profound significance in both biblical history and today’s world. Come prepared to experience the Bible in its historical context and discover its lasting relevance for our lives.
