Stepping into the River of Truth
When you come to the edge of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan. (Joshua 3:8)
Introduction
In Ephesians 4:25, the apostle Paul instructs us, "So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another." This verse serves as a foundational call for Christians to live out their faith with integrity and honesty, especially in their interactions with others. It reminds us that our commitment to truth is not just a personal moral choice but a vital part of fostering a community built on trust and mutual care.
Reflection
Recently, our congregation was blessed by a guest speaker who shared an inspiring message on the wisdom of trusting in God and the courage required to "step into the river." This metaphor, drawn from the Biblical account of Joshua leading the Israelites across the Jordan River, encapsulates the act of moving forward in faith, even when the path seems uncertain or fraught with danger.
The speaker recounted the story of a contemporary pastor who faced a critical decision when his government enacted laws that contradicted the teachings of Scripture. Despite the potential repercussions, this pastor chose to preach the truth boldly, trusting that God would honor his obedience. This pastor's actions illustrate the essence of Ephesians 4:25—rejecting falsehood and embracing truth, even when it costs us.
This real-life example serves as a powerful sermon illustration of our call as believers. Like stepping into a flowing river, speaking the truth requires faith and trust in God's sovereignty and goodness. The pastor's decision to uphold Biblical truths over societal approval mirrors the challenges many believers face today, where speaking the truth can sometimes lead to social or professional ostracism.
Application
As members of one another in Christ, we are called not only to avoid falsehood but to speak truth into our communities actively. This may mean having difficult conversations, standing up for what is right, or simply being transparent in our dealings. Each act of truth-telling strengthens the fabric of our community and aligns us more closely with God's kingdom.
Conclusion
Our journey of faith is often marked by moments where we must decide whether to step into the river, trusting in God’s provision and guidance. Like the pastor in our speaker's story, may we find the courage to speak truth boldly, serving as beacons of light in a world that often shuns the clarity and life-giving power of God’s truth.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your truth that sets us free and guides us. Help us to put away all forms of falsehood and to embrace the truth in love and courage. Give us the strength to step into the rivers of challenge and change, trusting that You will lead us through. May our words and actions reflect Your love and truth to all around us, for we know that we are indeed members of one another, united in Your Spirit. Amen.
