Standing in the Light

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Introduction

The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year—a time when the sun seems to pause in the sky, and the world basks in abundant light. For centuries, people have seen this day as a turning point in the rhythm of creation. Spiritually, it offers us a moment to pause and reflect on the Light that never fades: Jesus Christ, who promises to guide us not just for a day, but for a lifetime.

Reflection

Early one summer morning, a rancher named Tom walked the fence line of his property in the New Mexico desert. He carried a worn leather tool bag and moved with the rhythm of someone who had done this a thousand times. The fence posts cast long shadows in the angled sunlight, but as the day lengthened, those shadows shortened until the land was flooded with clear light. Tom knew that the brightest sun made it easiest to spot weaknesses in the wire—places that needed mending before they became a problem.

That morning, Tom thought about how easy it was to ignore little faults when things were dim or unclear—but when the sun exposed them, he had a choice: fix what was broken or pretend he didn’t see it.

In the same way, when we walk in the light of Christ, it becomes harder to hide from the things in our lives that need healing or change. But Jesus doesn’t shine His light to shame us—He does it to guide us, protect us, and make us whole.

Application

As sunlight fills this longest day, ask: What does the light of Christ reveal in me? Take a moment to walk your own "fence line"—to notice the areas of your heart, habits, or relationships that may need attention. Invite Jesus to show you not just what’s broken, but how to restore it in His grace and strength.

Conclusion

The brilliance of the solstice is a sacred reminder that God’s light is always greater than our darkness. Just as the sun reaches its height today, so Christ longs to be central in our lives—dispelling fear, revealing truth, and drawing us into deeper fellowship with Him.

Prayer

Jesus, Light of the World, as the sun reaches its highest point today, lift our eyes to You. Help us to welcome Your light into every corner of our hearts—not just where we feel strong, but also where we feel weak or uncertain. Teach us to walk in truth, to mend what needs healing, and to reflect Your love with clarity and grace. Thank You for never leaving us in the shadows. Amen.
