God Is Not Dead—He Speaks Still

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews_13:8)

Introduction

The letter to the Hebrews was written to a community that faced uncertainty, persecution, and pressure to return to the safety of old religious systems. In the midst of change and fear, the writer offers this grounding truth: Jesus Christ is constant. He doesn't shift with culture, opinion, or even the rise and fall of empires. The same Jesus who walked the roads of Galilee walks with us now—unchanging, ever faithful.

Reflection

On April 8, 1966, Americans were stunned when TIME Magazine hit the shelves with an unthinkable question plastered across its stark, black cover:

“Is God Dead?”

The article explored the growing secularization of culture and a philosophical movement that claimed God had become irrelevant. Churches were emptying, moral frameworks were shifting, and intellectuals were entertaining the idea that faith had no place in the modern world.

But here’s what’s remarkable: instead of killing God, that cover ignited spiritual curiosity. Believers were stirred to reaffirm their faith. Young people began asking deeper questions. The seeds of what would become the Jesus Movement of the 1970s were planted in that soil of doubt.

Like a storm clearing the air, the challenge sparked revival.

That cover might have asked a bold question—but God didn’t panic. He didn’t leave the throne. He never does.

Application

In our own lives, we sometimes experience a version of that dark magazine cover. Moments when grief, disappointment, or the brokenness of the world whisper:

“Is God really here?”

But the truth of Hebrews 13:8 stands tall in the storm:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

He is not dead.

He is not silent.

He is not distant.

If you're facing a moment of spiritual doubt or despair, know this: questioning isn’t a sin. Even Jesus cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46). But the answers are found not in the absence of God—but in His unchanging presence.

Return to His Word. Speak honestly in prayer. Surround yourself with believers. Listen to His voice in the quiet.

He is still speaking.

Conclusion

What TIME Magazine printed in 1966 may have shaken the cultural landscape—but it did not shake the Kingdom. In fact, it proved what’s been true throughout history: when the world doubts God, the faithful are stirred to seek Him more deeply.

The God who spoke to Moses in the burning bush, who raised Jesus from the dead, who comforted Paul in prison—He is still alive.

Still active.

Still the same.

Prayer

Eternal Lord, in a world that often forgets You, help me remember that You are alive, constant, and faithful. When doubt creeps in, draw near. When my heart feels far, speak softly and clearly. Thank You for being the same yesterday, today, and forever. May I stand firm in You when the world wavers and shine Your light in dark places. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
